The situation in Kenya
PRESS RELEASE
We are seriously concerned about the continuing tensions in Kenya due to mass riots involving deaths in Mombasa (the second most populated city of the country), which were caused by the assassination of the cleric Ibrahim Omar belonging to the extremist branch of Islam.
Additional police forces, as well as units of internal troops were sent into Mombasa. The Kenyan authorities have now managed to restore control over the city, however the situation is still explosive.
People in Kenya think these events are a direct echo of the occupation of Westgate, the largest shopping centre in Nairobi, by al-Shabaab,a terrorist organisation, which resulted in the deaths of 70 people.
The general criminogenic background in the capital city and in other cities of the country remains unfavourable.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends Russian nationals, as well as tour operators take these circumstances into consideration when making decisions about travelling to Kenya in the near future.
