Ulyanovsk region
Geographical position. The Ulyanovsk region is located in the central part of European Russia, in the very centre of the Middle Volga region, on both banks of the Volga river. The geographical middle of this largest river of the European plain is situated in Staromainskiy district of the region. The Ulyanovsk region borders with the Penza region and the Republic of Mordovia in the west, Chuvash and Tatarstan Republics in the north, the Samara region in the east, the Saratov region in the south. The area size is 37,2 thousand sq.km (0,21% of the Russian Federation area) which is tantamount to the territories of such countries as the Kingdom of Belgium, the Netherlands or the Republic of Albania.
The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature is about 13 degrees centigrade below zero in January and 20 degrees centigrade above zero in July, with the average annual precipitation at 350-450 mm (16 inches).
Population. As of January 1st, 2023, the population of the Ulyanovsk region made up 1 181 006 people. 77,0% of the total population of the region are city dwellers. The Ulyanovsk region is a densely populated area, the population density is 31,66 people per 1 sq.km of the territory. According to the 2020 All-Russian Population Census, the ethnic structure of the Ulyanovsk region includes the following nationalities: Russians – 77,49%, Tatars – 11,06%, Chuvashs – 5,78%, Mordva – 2,23%, Ukrainians – 0,38%, Azerbaijanians – 0,35%, Armenians – 0,33%, Gipsies – 0,43%, Belarusians – 0,09%, Germans – 0,09%, Uzbeks – 0,17%, Tajiks – 0,31%, Bashkirs – 0,06%, Moldovans– 0,03%, Mari people – 0,03%, Jews – 0,03%, other nationalities – 0,94%. The overall ethnic structure of Ulyanovsk region includes over 120 ethnic groups.
The city of Ulyanovsk (613,3 thousand people) is the administrative centre of the region. Other large cities of the region are Dimitrovgrad – (109,5 thousand people), Inza – (16,1 thousand people), Barysh (14,7 thousand people) and Novoulyanovsk – (13,5 thousand people).
Administrative-territorial system. The Ulyanovsk region is comprised of 167 municipalities, which include 3 city districts (Ulyanovsk, Novoulyanovsk and Dimitrovgrad), 21 municipal areas, 31 city settlements and 112 rural settlements. The highest official of the Ulyanovsk region is the Governor of the Ulyanovsk region Alexey Yurievich Russkikh (from October 4th, 2021). The supreme body of the executive power is the Government of the Ulyanovsk region. The supreme legislative body is the Legislative Assembly of the Ulyanovsk region elected for 5 years and consisting of 36 deputies. The chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Ulyanovsk Region is Valeriy Vasilievich Malyshev who started his duty on September 9th, 2018.
Heraldic attributes. The Ulyanovsk Region has official symbols – the coat of arms of the Ulyanovsk region, the flag of the Ulyanovsk region and the anthem of the Ulyanovsk region. The following heraldic description of the full coat of arms of the Ulyanovsk region has been established:
The coat of arms of the Ulyanovsk region is represented by a silver column with a figured capital and a base on the pedestal, crowned with the Imperial crown with flying azure ribbons, on the azure background. The shield is topped with a traditional demesne Crown (with gems on the hoop and three visible prongs in the form of acanthus leaves, interspersed with two visible smaller prongs with pearls). The Chargers are two gold lions, of which the right one holds three gold ears of wheat in the left forepaw and the left one - a gold sword in the right forepaw. Below the shield is a silver seagull flying to the right and touching the shield with its extended wings. The pedestal below the lions is decorated with gold oak branches. The motto “The pillar of Soul and State” is inscribed in azure letters on the gold ribbon.
The flag of the Ulyanovsk region represents an azure-coloured rectangular cloth where the height of the flag is 2/3rds of its width, with a white column and a figured capital and a base on the pedestal, with the Imperial crown on top, made in yellow, white and magenta colours with blue flying ribbons. The total height of the composition of the flag of the Ulyanovsk region is 9/10 of the width of the cloth.

Historical information. The city was founded in 1648 as a fortress on the right bank of the Volga river called Venets (the height is more than 120 m) by the voivode and okolnichy Bogdan Matveevich Hitrovo and the dyak Grigory Kunakov with a view to strengthen the «Sinbirsk line». Until the end of the XVIII century the city of Sinbirsk preserved its name, which originated, according to one of the versions, from the duke of the Volgian Bulgaria named Sinbir, who established a small town Sinbirsk on the Volga, lower than the present Ulyanovsk is situated. On January 7th, 1781 by order of Catherine II Simbirsk region ruled by the governor-general with an administrative centre in the city of Simbirsk was formed. In 1796 after the Simbirsk region ruled by the governor-general had been transformed into a province, Simbirsk became the principal city of the province. In 1924 the city was renamed into Ulyanovsk. Since 1928 Ulyanovsk was part of the Ulyanovsk District (existed until 1930), which in turn was part of the Middle Volga Region, since 1929 Ulyanovsk was part of the Middle Volga Territory, since 1935 - of the Kuibyshev Territory, since 1936 - of the Kuibyshev region. In 1943 the city became the centre of the newly formed Ulyanovsk region.
By the order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on April 20th, 1966 No. 4724-VI "On awarding the Ulyanovsk region with the Order of Lenin", the Ulyanovsk region was awarded the Order of Lenin for the successes achieved in the development of the national economy.
By the order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR No. 596-VIII on December 11th, 1970 "On awarding the city of Ulyanovsk with the Order of Lenin", the city of Ulyanovsk was awarded the Order of Lenin for the great successes achieved by the city's workers in economic and cultural construction, in fulfilling the tasks of the five-year plan for the development of industrial production.
By the order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 11th, 1982 "On awarding the city of Dimitrovgrad of the Ulyanovsk region with the Order of Peoples' Friendship", the city of Dimitrovgrad was awarded the Order of Peoples' Friendship for the successes achieved by the city's workers in economic and cultural construction, and their contribution to strengthening international ties.
By the order of the President of the Russian Federation on July 2nd, 2020 No. 444 "On conferring the honorary title of the Russian Federation" City of Labor Valor", the city of Ulyanovsk was awarded the honorary title "City of Labor Valor" for the significant contribution of residents to the achievement of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, ensuring uninterrupted production of military and civilian products at the city's enterprises, showing massive labor heroism and dedication.
In the 1950s and 60s, the Ulyanovsk region turned into an industrial and agricultural region, and the city of Ulyanovsk became a major industrial center. As of January 1st, 1966, there were 292 industrial enterprises in the region, including the Dimitrovgrad Research Institute of Nuclear Reactors, the Ulyanovsk Instrument Design Bureau, the Ulyanovsk Plant of Heavy and Unique Machine Tools, the Ulyanovsk Mechanical Plant, the Ulyanovsk Radio Tube Plant, the Research and Production Association "Mars", the plants "Kometa" and "Contactor". The tannery, refrigeration plant, the confectionery factory "Volzhanka" and the factory "Rus" produced high-quality products. Also, the Melekesky (since 1972 Dimitrovgrad) industrial cloth Factory, the Novoulianovsky Cement Plant, the Novomainsky Carpet Factory, the Dimitrovgrad Carpet and cloth Factory, the Tsilninsky sugar factory, the Undorovsky plant "Volzhanka" and others produced their products. The automobile bridge (as the automobile section of the existing railway bridge) was opened.
In the late 1960s, in connection with the preparation for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Lenin's birth, architectural complexes were built that still determine the appearance of Ulyanovsk: Lenin Memorial, new buildings of the Pedagogical Institute (University), the Palace of Pioneers, the Regional Children's Library, new educational building of gymnasium No. 1, the high-rise hotel "Venets", new buildings of the railway station and river port, a modern airport, the Palace of Culture of Trade Unions (now "Gubernatorsky"), new residential neighborhoods.
In the 1970s and 1980s the plant "Gidroapparat" and the Dimitrovgrad Automobile Assembly plant began to turn out products. The plant "Iskra" quickly takes the place of one of the largest manufacturers of domestic microelectronics. Since 1972, the serial production of the UAZ-469 car began, which became the main commander's car in the Soviet army and in the Warsaw Pact countries. In 2022 UAZ-469 celebrated the 50th anniversary. In 1976 - 1985, the first stage of the Ulyanovsk Aviation Industrial Complex (UAIC, now - Branch of PJSC "Il-Aviastar") was built and put into operation, which at that time was the largest aviation enterprise in Europe and the USSR. An-124 Ruslan became the pride of the Ulyanovsk aircraft industry. The Vostochny airport with a unique runway was built for its testing.
Today, the Ulyanovsk region continues to be an industrial region – more than 80% of the total production of the region is the manufacturing industry. The priority areas are aircraft industry, automotive industry, food production, metallurgical production, furniture production, consumer goods industry.
The products that are produced in the Ulyanovsk region are known not only in other regions, but also all over the world - these are UAZ cars, upgraded Il-76MD-90A aircraft, SIMAZ buses, unique avionics of the Ulyanovsk Instrument Design Bureau and much more.
The fate of many outstanding people is connected with Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk: the historiographer N.Karamzin, the writers I.Goncharov, D.Grigorovich, the Wanderer (P.S Petrov), A.Korinfsky, the poets N.Yazykov, D.Minaev, N.Sadovnikov, D.Oznobishin, D.Davydov, the artists A.Plastov, D.Arkhangelsky, the composers A.Varlamov, O.Stankevich, conductor E.Serov, the enlighteners I.Ulyanov and I.Yakovlev, decembrists I.Turgenev, V.Ivashev, architects F.Livchak, A.Shode, F.Volsov, biologist A.Lyubishchev, botanist V.Blagoveshchensky, zoologist S.Buturlin, and others. V.Ulyanov (Lenin) and A.F.Kerensky were born here.
By the order of the President of the Russian Federation No. 277 on May 17th, 2021, the Ulyanovsk (Baratayevka) international airport was named after N.Karamzin.
The socio-economic situation, structure and potential of the economy, the place of the region in the economic life of Russia.
Almost a third of the gross regional product of the Ulyanovsk region is formed by the branches of the manufacturing sector of the economy. One of the main drivers of growth is the construction of a diversified regional economy, capable of rapid rebuilding and characterized by the orientation to produce the final product.
The Ulyanovsk region is an industrial and agricultural territory with multisectoral industry. The core of the regional industry is mechanical engineering, represented by instrument making, machine tool building, automotive industry, aircraft construction; textile and food industries are also developed. There are enterprises of construction industry, wood-working and forest industries.
According to the results of 2022, the industrial production index in the Ulyanovsk region reached a value of 93.7% compared to the same period of the previous year. At the same time, it is worth noting the high base of 2021 - 111.8%.
In 2022 under the conditions of sanctions pressure a number of foreign companies which located their production facilities on the territory of the Ulyanovsk region had to leave Russia. Thus, the withdrawal from Russia of such companies as DMG MORI, Vestas, Martur LLC, Hempel, Nemak Rus LLC, Joyson Safety Systems Rus LLC, Isuzu Rus LLC, Bridgestone Manufacturing CIS LLC, Schaeffler Rus LLC, significantly influenced the decline in the index of industrial production in 2022 in such sectors as the production of vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, the production of machinery and equipment not included in other groups, the production of finished metal products, the production of rubber and plastic products.
As of 5 months of 2023, there is a recovery growth in the industrial production index, which amounted to 98.9%. Compared to May 2022 the industrial production indeх in May 2023 amounted to 129.3%. The recovery growth in industrial production is also confirmed by an increase in the shipment of goods by 11% (162.2 billion rubles).
The region ranks among the top twenty most investment-attractive regions of the Russian Federation. According to the results of 2022 105.1 billion rubles were invested in the economy of the Ulyanovsk region, which amounts to 93.5% compared to the level of 2021. The total volume of investments in fixed assets for the full range of enterprises for the first quarter of 2023 amounted to 15.8 billion rubles, of which 44.5% was invested in “machinery, equipment, transport” (7 billion rubles), slightly more than 30% in “buildings (except residential) and facilities, land amelioration) (4.7 billion rubles), the third place in the investment structure is taken by “housing” − 19.6% (3.1 billion rubles).
The main areas of investment are manufacturing, trade, science and technology, logistics, agriculture.
According to the results of 2022, the index of agricultural production in farms of all categories amounted to 123.4%. On this indicator the Ulyanovsk region takes the 5th place in the Volga Federal District rating, and the 7th place in the Russian Federation. This growth was due to the yield of grain crops, the share of which in the index of agricultural production is 30%.
At the end of 2022, the volume of work completed by enterprises and organizations in the "Construction" sector amounted to 144.3% compared to January-December 2021. This is the best value of the index in the Volga Federal District.
The Ulyanovsk region displays a high provision of living space per capita. On average in the Russian Federation, this indicator is estimated at 26-28 m² per person, in the Ulyanovsk region in 2022 it amounted to 31.9 m² per person. At the end of 2022, the indicator “Volume of housing construction” of the national project “Housing” was achieved.
The average salary according to the results of January – April 2023 was 44,5 thousand rubles, the growth rate was 114.5%. The level of registered unemployment (according to the methodology of the International Labor Organization) in May 2023 amounted to 3.4% of the economically active population.
International relations, cooperation agreements with foreign partners.
Nowadays the Ulyanovsk region is actively developing cooperation with such countries as Belarus, Vietnam, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Turkey, Uzbekistan.
Since the fall of 2020, the Russia-BRICS International Youth Cooperation Project Office has been operating in Ulyanovsk, the main purpose of which is to help strengthen youth cooperation between Russia and the rest of the BRICS alliance on the regular basis.
The Government of the Ulyanovsk region has concluded 8 agreements on cooperation with partners in foreign countries.
For 9 months of 2022, the foreign trade turnover of the Ulyanovsk region amounted to 542.9 million US dollars, including exports amounted 203.2 million US dollars, imports - 339.7 million US dollars.

Science and education. Ulyanovsk Region is a region with a dynamic education system. In the region there are 444 educational organizations implementing the pre-school education program, 390 general education organizations (including 19 regional state institutions, 2 private institutions, 369 municipal schools (364 daytime and 5 evening (shift), 109 organizations of additional education and 623 educational organizations that implement additional education programs.
Currently, 42 educational organizations carry out educational activities on the territory of the Ulyanovsk region according to educational programs of secondary vocational education, 34 of them are regional, 5 organizations are federal, and 3 are private educational organizations.
The system of higher education in the Ulyanovsk region is represented by 5 federal universities and 5 branches of state educational institutions of higher education. The universities implement educational programs of higher education in 72 areas of bachelor degree courses, 19 specialties and 48 areas of master's degree training.
Culture, local traditions. The cultural infrastructure of the Ulyanovsk region has a high functional diversity, meets many criteria for the availability of services of cultural organizations for the population, and takes into account the cultural and historical characteristics of the territories. On the territory of the Ulyanovsk region there are 1463 objects of cultural heritage (monuments of history and culture), 45 museums (including federally-funded «Motherland of Lenin» Museum-Reserve which incorporates 17 museums and 2 exhibition halls, as well as the Children's Museum Centre, 4 regional state museums: Lenin Memorial, uniting 4 museums, Ulyanovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore n.a. I.A.Goncharov with 4 branches, Ulyanovsk Regional Art Museum with 4 branches, Undorovsky Paleontological Museum, 11 municipal museums, 54 non-state museums of various forms of ownership and departmental affiliation, among which particularly noteworthy are the unique “Leading Branch Museum of the History of Civil Aviation”, Russia’s first and only “Museum of the Balalaika”, the first museum of simbircite in the world - the “Simbircite Chamber”.
Theatrical art is represented by 8 professional theatres, including 4 regional state theatres: Ulyanovsk Regional Drama Theatre named after I.A. Goncharov, Theatre of the Young Spectator, Ulyanovsk Regional Puppet Theatre named after Valentina Leontieva with a branch in Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk Youth Theatre, 1 municipal theatre - Dimitrovgrad Drama Theatre named after A.N. Ostrovsky and 2 non-state theatres – Theatre-Studio “Enfant Terrible” (Ulyanovsk) and Theatre-Studio Podium (Dimitrovgrad).
Three major state orchestras glorify the Ulyanovsk region on various international and Russian venues: the State Academic symphony Orchestra "Gubernatorsky", the State Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments, the State Brass Band "Derzhava", as well as the State Song and Dance Ensemble "The Volga " and the Pop Ballet "Exciton".
At the disposal of citizens of the Ulyanovsk region are 506 libraries, including 3 regional state libraries, 485 cultural and leisure institutions, 66 cinema halls, 3 professional educational organizations in the field of culture and art, 52 children's art schools. The work of the archive service is provided by 2 regional state archival institutions and 24 municipal archives.
The Ulyanovsk region annually hosts various festivals, including international ones, such as the International Music Festival "World, epoch, names…", the International Theater Festival "History of the Russian State", the International Festival of Film and Television programs for family viewing n.a. Valentina Leontieva "From the bottom of my heart", the International Assembly of Artists "Plastov’s Autumn", etc.
The Ulyanovsk region was the first among the regions of the Russian Federation to receive the title "Literary Flagship of Russia-2016" in 2019-2020 - the honorary status "Territory of books and reading". In 2021 the Russian Book Union assigned the Ulyanovsk region the permanent status of “the Territory of Books and Reading” for the most developed reading infrastructure and the brightest initiatives to promote books.
On December 11th , 2015, the city of Ulyanovsk was the first Russian city to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of "Literature".
Non-governmental organizations. According to the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation there are 2019 non-commercial organizations registered in the Ulyanovsk region.
Mass media. At present there are 102 mass media of different types functioning in the Ulyanovsk region, including 64 periodicals. The top circulation of regional socio-political publications is held by “Molodyozhnaya gazeta” (over 9.000 copies). Newspapers such as “Argumenty i Fakty” in Ulyanovsk” (6000 copies) and “Narodnaya Gazeta” (4500 copies) are also popular among information publications.

Television programs are produced by 10 registered TV Channels, the most popular ones are the branch of the Federal state unitary enterprise “All-Russian television and radio broadcasting company”, “State Television and radio broadcasting company “Volga”, LLC "Reporter 73", "UlpravdaTV" and "DimGrad24" (the last two broadcasting on the 22nd channel).
There are 25 radio channels and 2 radio programs registered in the region. The radio channel "2X2" broadcasts over 20 thousand news per year (with potential audience of over 900 thousand people). The radio channel "Militseyskaya Volna" broadcasts more than 9 thousand news per year. Over 200 thousand people over 12 years old listen to Dorozhnoye Radio Ulyanovsk Channel every day.

Transport infrastructure, tourism and recreation facilities.
Two international airports are located in Ulyanovsk: airport “Ulyanovsk - Vostochny” of class "A", which is able to accept all types of aircraft without restrictions of their take-off weight, including aircraft AN-124 “Ruslan” and “Boeing-747”; and “Ulyanovsk airport (Baratayevka) n.a. N.M.Karamzin” of class "B", receiving flights from 6 airports of the Russian Federation. The gas filling infrastructure is being developed. 11 gas filling stations are currently in operation, and there are plans to build 3 more between 2023 and 2025.
The administrative centre of the Ulyanovsk region - the city of Ulyanovsk - is a large river port capable of receiving vessels of the "river - sea" type. Ulyanovsk River Port, built in 1958 and located within the city of Ulyanovsk on the banks of the Volga River, is a link with adjacent modes of transport: rail and road. The port owns railway access roads with a length of 770 meters. The total area is 19.2 hectares. The average long-term duration of navigation is 195-200 days. The mooring wall is 595 meters long. These are the main "water gates" of the region on the Volga with access to five seas: the Azov, Caspian, Baltic, White, Black, through the channels – the entrance to the Ladoga and Onega lakes. Passenger berths accept river boats with passengers and tourists from Rostov, Perm, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Ufa and Nizhny Novgorod. The port has cargo and passenger berths for servicing the assigned and transit fleet, as well as a warehouse for 500 thousand tons of inert cargo.
The organization of railway transportation is carried out by the Kuibyshev Railway, which is a branch of JSC "Russian Railways". In 2017, the building of the Ulyanovsk-Central Railway Station was renovated and the adjacent territory was reconstructed. On average, 1,500 passengers leave the station per day. Communication between the city of Ulyanovsk and the capital of our homeland, Moscow, is carried out by a branded train consisting of modern double-decker wagons.
The total length of the road network is 13.5 thousand km. Highways of the federal significance pass through the territory of the region, connecting the Ulyanovsk region with neighbouring regions: the republics of Tatarstan, Mordovia, Chuvashia, the regions of Samara, Saratov, Penza. On the territory on the region the section of the international transport route "Europe - Western China" is located, passing along the federal highways "Tsivilsk - Ulyanovsk" and "Access to Ulyanovsk from the M-5 highway Ural".
The Ulyanovsk region is a region with a distinctive historical environment, unique natural resources, experience in the development of event tourism. The region has significant potential for the development of cultural and educational tourism.
The Volga River is one of the important factors attracting guests to the region. The presence of wide bays contributes to the development of recreational tourism in the region, making the coast convenient for hosting numerous recreation centers and parking places for yachts and other vessels. The width of the bay between the settlements of Undory and Staraya Maina is almost 40 km, which makes this part of the Volga the widest after the bay near the village of Kamskoye Ustye (Republic of Tatarstan). Another feature of the Ulyanovsk region, due to its location on the banks of the Volga River, is the presence of two bridges in the regional centre - the 'Imperial', one of the oldest railway bridges in Russia, and the 'Presidential' bridge, which is 13 km long and was the longest bridge in Russia and one of the longest in Europe when it was opened in 2009.
The Ulyanovsk region is the birthplace of V.I. Lenin, there are many museums associated with his life in the city. This is the Lenin Memorial Complex – an architectural monument of the XX century, one of the largest museums, scientific and cultural centers of the Volga region and Russia. The Lenin Memorial complex includes: the House-Museum of V.I. Lenin, the pavilions "Garage of the USSR. Retromototechnics" and "Weapons of feat".
The State Historical and Memorial Museum-Reserve "Motherland of V.I. Lenin" is a unique urban-planning and landscape complex occupying 174 hectares in the central part of the city and uniting within its borders historical, architectural and memorial monuments of Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk, as well as 17 museums of various directions. At the end of 2022, the museum ranked among the top 50 best museums of the Russian Federation.
The Ulyanovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore and the Ulyanovsk Regional Art Museum are among of the oldest museums in the Volga region, which store the most valuable cultural heritage of all-Russian and world significance.
The region is actively developing tourism projects, thanks to which new tourist infrastructure facilities appear and new public accommodation facilities are built. A congress center was opened on the basis of the Radisson hotel complex. “The Imperial Village” and “Mirage” hotels were opened. The water park "Ulet" and the recreation park "Shishkin" have already established themselves as an excellent place for recreation for citizens and guests of the city.
Currently 9 tourism projects have already been implemented within the framework of the national project "Tourism and hospitality industry". Among them are a rental station for SUP boarding in Ulyanovsk, two ski resorts: Undory and Venets i Ya, new beaches in the tourist village Artekovo in the Cherdaklinsky district and in the city of Ulyanovsk, two new year-round pools, a unique museum of simbircite.
There are currently 137 regional nature reserves on the territory of the region, including 13 state nature reserves and 124 natural landmarks, among which is 1 federal national park and 1 geopark. In 2018, the "Undoria Geopark " was founded on the territory of the Ulyanovsk Region.
The “Sengileevsky mountains” national park is a specially protected area located southeast of Ulyanovsk, in the right bank part of the Ulyanovsk region. The Sengileevsky mountains in the Ulyanovsk region are unique untouched forest-steppe zones of the Volga Upland. There are eight natural monuments on the territory of the Sengileevsky district. On the territory of the park tourists can go hiking, cycling or skiing, for example, along a well-known ecological trail "Following the Marmot" or the new trail "Volzhsky Bereg", passing through a pine forest and a linden grove, along the Kuibyshev reservoir, visit mountains Grannoe ear and Arbuginskaya mountain, follow the Shilovskaya forest-steppe eco-route.
In the center of the national park "Sengileevsky mountains", in the village of Smorodino, there is an eco-farm. Tourists are offered to visit the farm, participate in master classes, taste farm-made products and visit several tourist attractions in the Sengileevsky district. Other favorite places for tourists in the Sengileevsky district are one of the best glampings in the region - "Hills" – and the husky kennel "Ladny Stan" in the village of Tushna.
A separate mention should be made of the Undoriya geopark, on the territory of which there are 18 geological and 23 hydrogeological objects. The geopark is known for its deposits of simbircite ornamental stones, healing mineral waters (“Volzhanka” brand), and ancient fossil remains of the ichthyofauna. The natural monument "Gorodischensky” geological cut is of worldwide scientific importance, and natural monuments - the geological cut "Valley of Crystals", the geological cut "Devil's Comb", the geological cut "Ice Age Valley" - are of national value.
On the territory of the geopark there are two comfortable all year round health resorts - the sanatorium "Dubki" and the sanatorium named after V.I.Lenin, a plant for bottling mineral water "Volzhanka", Ulyanovsk Regional Social and Rehabilitation Center named after E.M. Chuchkalov. There is also a camping "Chaika", a children's health camp "Volzhanka", as well as an equestrian club and a ski resort "Undory".
In addition, there are other accommodation facilities located closer to the city – the farm "Svoya Ferma" and tourist recreation centers (recreation center "Mikhailovskoye" and others).
On the territory of the Ulyanovsk region there are 13 sanatoriums, 8 sanatoriums-preventoriums. The Undory resort is included in the list of 18 unique sanatoriums in Russia. This is the only resort in Russia where waters with a high content of organic substances are used. The main feature of the Undory resort is unique mineral water sources, similar in composition to the mineral water of Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic) and Truskavets (Ukraine). According to the booking portal "Sanatoriums of Rossia" («Санатории – России.рф»), the Ulyanovsk region ranked in the top of 25 affordable resorts in non-resort regions of Russia in the summer of 2023.
There are also more than 40 campsites and glamping sites in the Ulyanovsk region. The most popular of them are the park hotel "Barn House", glampings "Hills", "A-glamp", "Arbuga", "Turgenev Islands" and others.
In the Ulyanovsk region there are 2 ski complexes – “Undory” and “Venets i Ya”, 10 equestrian sports clubs, facilities for yacht tourism.
More than 40 events are held annually in the region, including conferences and forums: food and music festival “Boulevard”, “Immortal Feat”, “Made in the Ulyanovsk region”, “The Volga Way”, “Plastov’s Autumn” and others.
Since 2013 the Ulyanovsk region has also been implementing an international tourist project "Red Route", which is one of the most promising projects in the field of tourism cooperation between Russia and China.
Since 2017 "A Nobleman of the Volga River" branded tourist route has been implemented. In 2022 it received the status of a national tourist route of federal significance. In total there are only 37 national tourist routes of this kind in Russia.
There are more than 125 different thematic routes on the territory of the region. The routes pass through the territory of the Ulyanovsk region and allow to discover picturesque natural monuments: Akshuat dendrological park, landscape monument of nature Skripinskie Kuchury, Bannye islands, Valley of wild peonies, Zimina Mountain, the White Lake, Krasnogulyevsky caves, geopark "Undoria" and the National Park "Sengileevsky Mountains".
