Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Foreign Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt Sameh Shoukry

On December 20, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Foreign Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt Sameh Shoukry on the sidelines of the 6th session of the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum held in Marrakech.

The ministers had an in-depth exchange of opinions on the situation with the Palestinian-Israeli conflict with a focus on the humanitarian disaster in Gaza. Sergey Lavrov expressed gratitude to his Egyptian partner for facilitating the safe transport of Russian citizens from the enclave. He emphasised the importance of bringing about a ceasefire as soon as possible and launching negotiations based on the norms of international law and UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions, so that this chronic conflict is settled peacefully and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to a sovereign state within the 1967 borders are realised.

The ministers also discussed the settlement of crises and conflicts in Yemen, Libya, Syria and Lebanon.

They reviewed a package of current issues relating to the strengthening of multifaceted cooperation between Russia and Egypt, including the maintenance of an active political dialogue and interaction at BRICS, the UN and other international platforms.
