Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Holds Talks with Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Michael Spindelegger

Talks took place on October 5 between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Austria Michael Spindelegger, who arrived in Moscow on a working visit.
During an exchange of views on a broad spectrum of issues in bilateral relations, the sides noted the enhanced intensity of the dialogue at the highest and high level, and discussed a schedule of contacts for the near term. They positively assessed the state of cooperation in the economic, cultural, scientific and humanitarian fields.
Progress in preparing a number of intergovernmental agreements, on cooperation in the framework of the South Stream gas pipeline project, on scientific and technological cooperation, on mutual disaster assistance and on counter-crime cooperation, was discussed. The readiness of the sides to constructively continue the dialogue on displaced cultural property was reiterated and mutual support for the work of the Russian-Austrian Commission of Historians, which acquires particular relevance in connection with the upcoming 65th anniversary of the end of World War II, was expressed.
The ministers discussed key questions of the UN agenda and the possibilities of collaboration between the two countries in the interest of strengthening the central role and authority of the Organization in world affairs, and thematic priorities for the period of Austria's presidency of the Security Council in November 2009.
Other themes in the international section of the talks included the Russian initiative to develop and conclude a Euro-Atlantic Security Treaty, Middle East settlement, the situation in the Balkans, the Iranian nuclear program and individual aspects of the disarmament file.
