Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s telephone conversation with Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Malta Evarist Bartolo
On June 10, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Malta Evarist Bartolo upon the latter’s request.
The ministers exchanged views on stepping up bilateral relations, which have been an example of equitable, respectful and mutually beneficial cooperation since the proclamation of Malta’s independence in 1964.
The Maltese minister expressed his country’s interest in the consistent development of political dialogue, inter-parliamentary ties and cultural and humanitarian contact with the Russian Federation.
In view of the 75th anniversary of Victory over Nazism, the ministers noted the particular importance of pooling efforts in the UN, the Council of Europe, and the OSCE to counter attempts to glorify Nazism and falsify history, including the outcome of WWII.
The ministers expressed support for the continued practical work at the foreign ministry level on implementing the previous agreements on expanding the legal foundations for bilateral ties. They noted the importance of completing the talks on combatting crime, conducting humanitarian operations in the event of a crisis, establishing diplomatic missions, and developing bilateral trade and economic cooperation, as well as youth and sports ties.
The mnisters expressed mutual interest in increasingly revealing the potential of investment cooperation. They agreed to encourage contact in healthcare, in particular, on problems caused by the coronavirus infection.
During the discussion of international issues, the ministers paid special attention to the Libyan settlement process, emphasising the need to enhance security and stop illegal migration in the Mediterranean. They reaffirmed Moscow and Valletta’s intention to create conditions for the reconciliation of the warring parties in Libya with a view to reaching a political and diplomatic settlement under UN aegis.
