Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Ivanov on October 1 met with Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Surakiat Sathianthai, who is in Moscow on an official visit.
During the talk, which was held in a benevolent and constructive atmosphere, the sides examined substantively the state of, and prospects for Russian-Thai ties and reaffirmed mutual interest in strengthening the traditionally friendly relations and building on mutually beneficial cooperation in the political, scientific, technological, humanitarian and other fields.
Special attention was paid to the questions of strengthening the juridical base of relations and the development and diversification of trade and economic ties, and the great importance which the sides attach to the upcoming (in the middle of this October) visit to Russia of Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was emphasized in this context.
An exchange of views on a broad range of international and regional problems of mutual concern also took place. Discussion focused on key processes and tendencies determining the current situation in the world.
The talks showed the identity or similarity of Russia's and Thailand's approaches on a broad range of questions of consolidation of peace and security, the development of states' cooperation, the formation of a democratic, just and equitable world order, the ensuring of the key role of the UN and its Security Council in international relations, advancement towards nuclear disarmament and the strengthening of the nonproliferation regime, the settlement of conflicts, globalization, and the combining of efforts by the world community to counter international terrorism and religious extremism.
Much attention was devoted to the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, activities of ASEAN and the ASEAN Regional Security Forum (ARF) and the tasks of deepening the Russia-ASEAN partner dialogue. The Ministers spoke in favor of closer cooperation among the regional states in the interest of maintaining stability in the AP region and Southeast Asia. The role of the ARF as the key mechanism for multilateral dialogue on security issues in the region was positively assessed in this context.
The sides stated with satisfaction the availability of good prerequisites for the deepening of practical cooperation at various levels both on a bilateral basis and within the framework of international and regional organizations and forums.
The Ministers signed a Protocol on the Preparation of a Joint Collection of Archival Documents.
