CSTO Anniversary celebrated at the Russian embassy in Washington, DC
On November 8th Russian Embassy in the United States hosted a reception. The occasion was dedicated to CSTO anniversary. Heads of diplomatic missions of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan held welcoming speeches.
Ambassador Anatoly Antonov said: "We have all gathered here today to celebrate the 25-year anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty and the 15 years since the Collective Security Treaty Organization (the CSTO). Through all these years the CSTO has journeyed a long path and evolved into a reputable regional structure, which ensures security and stability, territorial integrity and sovereignty of its member-states. The mechanisms of military and political cooperation established within the organization and a corresponding military potential provide an ability to adequately respond to modern challenges and threats within the CSTO’s area of responsibility. The most serious of them are terrorism, drug trafficking, transnational crimes, illegal migration, natural and man made disasters. It is important to note (and it was stressed by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin in April this year) that our regional alliance was created neither during the Cold War, nor during the power block competition, which renders the attempts to rival the CSTO against another state or a group of countries as illegitimate. Our founding goal is to create a favorable and stable environment for comprehensive development of all member-states. We are open to cooperation with all countries for the sake of promoting peace, security and stability both on the regional and international levels. The CSTO Charter additionally states that in order to achieve the assigned tasks its member-states shall give priority to political means. It is important that all decisions within the CSTO are made by consensus; we have gained vast experience through working on the basis of equal partnership, mutual respect and non-interference in domestic affairs. We see it as strength and potential for future development of the Organization. Apart from reinforcing its defenses, the CSTO created conditions for collective advancement of common interests on the international arena. We are satisfied with an increased level of foreign policy coordination among the Organization’s member-states. The CSTO successfully interacts with other international structures, which address regional security issues, most notably, - the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. We expand cooperation on maintaining peace and security between the CSTO and the United Nations. Dear colleagues, The joint statement made by the CSTO member-states during the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on October 4, 2017 includes a call for joint efforts of all states in order to strengthen comprehensive stability as a foundation for securing a lasting peace, reliable, equal and indivisible security. I wish to all every success in achieving this goal. When we stand united, there is no task we cannot handle!"
