Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at talks with Foreign Minister of the Republic of Abkhazia Oleg Bartsits, Moscow, June 6, 2025

We are delighted to welcome you to Moscow.

As far as I know, this is your first visit to Russia in your new capacity since your appointment in April 2025. We have already sent our congratulations, but I would like to take this opportunity to personally wish you success in your new post for the benefit of the Republic of Abkhazia.

We remember that you spent a considerable amount of time working in Russia as a trade representative. Our trade has increased every year, in part thanks to the contribution of your trade mission in Moscow.

Our countries have been allies for centuries. Today, we are working to create a common security and defence space in accordance with the decisions of our presidents. We are coordinating the socioeconomic legislations of Abkhazia and Russia so that we can make the most of the available resources and assistance for achieving tangible results in the pension, healthcare, education and other spheres in the Republic of Abkhazia.

Our strategic agenda, which was outlined in the meetings between President Vladimir Putin and President Badra Gunba on March 5 and May 10, 2025, will be further elaborated and specified, including at the level of our ministries.

We have a good opportunity today to discuss our bilateral plans and instructions, as well as our continued efforts on the international stage, primarily in the South Caucasus.
