Comment by the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the besmearing of the monument to Soviet warriors – liberators in Vienna
At night, between the 7 and 8 May, unknown persons besmeared the memorial to the warriors-liberators at the Schwarzenbergplatz in the centre of the Austrian capital. The memorial inscription on the granite cube in front of the faзade of the monument was painted with yellow and blue paint, imitating the Ukrainian flag.
We are outraged at another attempt by vandals and we view this incident as an attempt to disrupt the wreath-laying ceremony at this monument on the 9 May, with the participation of veterans of the Great Patriotic War, compatriots, and representatives of the embassies of the CIS countries and of the Austrian community.
Based on this fact, a protest note was sent to the Federal Ministry of European, Integration and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Austria, insistently requesting the competent Austrian bodies to take urgent measures to remove the damage to the memorial complex, and to find and punish those who are guilty, as well as prevent such incidents happening in the future. Taking into consideration the international legal obligations of Vienna, which are formalised in the State Treaty about the restoration of an independent and democratic Austria of 1955, and taking into consideration that these acts of violence are recurrent, we appeal to the Austrian authorities again to take proper measures to protect the memorial at the Schwarzenbergplatz.
