Press release on the outcome of the general elections in Brazil
Brazil held a second round of the general elections on October 30. According to the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court, former President Luiz Lula won the race with 50.9 percent of the vote.
President of Russia Vladimir Putin sent him a congratulatory message.
Luiz Lula is well known in Russia. We would like to note his contribution to the development of friendly relations between our countries. We hope that the course towards strengthening multifaceted bilateral cooperation and Russian-Brazilian interaction at the UN, BRICS, G20 and other multilateral platforms will continue. We are ready for this.
Russia appreciates Brazil’s role in international affairs, as well as its consistent work to promote the constructive principles and to form a democratic, polycentric world order. We regard Brazil as a strong candidate for permanent member of the UN Security Council.
We wish the president elect success in ensuring his country’s prosperity and further socioeconomic development for the benefit of the broad popular masses of Brazil.
