Comment by the Information and Press Department on the sharp escalation of tensions between Israel and Syria, Israel and Lebanon
According to incoming information, a dramatic heightening of tensions is taking place in the Israel-Syria-Lebanon 'triangle.'
After an Israeli air strike on the Syrian town of Quneitra on January 18, Syria fired shells on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on January 27. Israel responded by shelling the Syrian army's positions. On January 28, the military wing of Hezbollah fired on an Israeli army jeep near the so-called Shebaa Farms, wounding four Israeli soldiers.
Moscow is gravely concerned over the escalating tensions between Israel and Syria, as well as between Israel and Lebanon. We call on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint, stop the spiral of violence and take immediate steps to deescalate the situation.
