Official Visit to Peru by Sergey Lavrov, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov paid an official visit to the Republic of Peru from August 22-23.
The head of the Russian foreign affairs agency was received by President of the Republic of Peru Ollanta Humala. President Humala expressed gratitude for the message of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sent on the occasion of his assumption of office and for the invitation contained in the message to visit the Russian Federation, which he intends to avail himself of on a date convenient to both sides. Sergey Lavrov also met with the President of the National Congress of Peru, Daniel Abugattas, and held talks with the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Peru, Francisco Eguiguren, whom the President appointed the head of the Peruvian delegation at the talks in the Foreign Ministry.
During the talks the parties exchanged views on a wide range of topical issues in bilateral relations and of the international and regional agenda, including the integration processes in Latin America and the AP region.
They noted with satisfaction the similarity of positions on key international issues and the reciprocal desire to build on the momentum of political dialogue between Russia and Peru, including collaboration within the UN and other international and regional forums.
The Ministers discussed prospects for the development of Russian-Peruvian commercial, economic and investment ties, and stressed the need to elevate them to a qualitatively higher level to match the real capabilities of the two countries. In this connection Lavrov and Eguiguren noted the role of the Russian-Peruvian Intergovernmental Commission on Commercial, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation and Fisheries that has resumed its work, as the principal mechanism for building up economic relations between the two countries. They underscored the importance of intensifying direct contacts between business representatives of both countries.
The Ministers gave a positive assessment of ties in the field of military-technical cooperation and stated the readiness to step up interaction in the scientific, technological and humanitarian fields.
They spoke in favor of further improving the juridical base of bilateral relations.
At the end of the talks a Joint Statement was signed.
