Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during talks with Mauritania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Isselkou Ould Ahmed Izid Bih, Moscow, November 7, 2017
Mr Minister,
Friends,
Welcome to Moscow. We are glad that our bilateral relations have become more dynamic following a period of decline. In 2010 and 2014 your predecessors visited Russia. Today, we are very pleased to receive you in this capacity.
Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov made a visit to to Nouakchott in May 2017. A protocol on consultations between our ministries was signed then. This is a good base for building up our cooperation.
We are interested in continuing a sustained exchange of opinions and positions on regional stability issues. I hope that today’s talks will bring results both in the discussion of international issues and the search of practical ways to boost our trade and economic and investment ties.
Cultural and educational exchanges are also a very promising area, considering that over 1,500 citizens of your country have studied in the USSR or Russia, including Mr Ambassador, who graduated here.
Once again, welcome!
