Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s talks with Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Isselkou Ould Ahmed Izid Bih
On November 7, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania Isselkou Ould Ahmed Izid Bih who is on a working visit to Moscow.
The two diplomats discussed the current state and prospects for the further strengthening of Russia-Mauritania relations. They agreed to boost political dialogue based on the Protocol on Consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Russia and Mauritania, signed in May.
The talks focused on ways to expand the mutually beneficial economic cooperation, the main area of which is sea fishing. The Mauritanian party emphasised its interest in involving Russian companies in the implementation of large scale investment projects in Mauritania. To this end, it was considered viable to promote direct contacts between businesses. Russia will continue providing training and education to Mauritanian specialists for the development of national human resources.
The ministers exchanged opinions on current international and regional topics, including the developments in North Africa, the Sahara-Sahel region and the Middle East with an emphasis on the situation in Libya, Mali, Syria and the Western Sahara peace process. They also confirmed the common adherence to the uncompromised fight against terrorism and noted the need to overcome conflicts through dialogue with the central role of the United Nations on the basis of a strict adherence to the principle of non-intervention and respect for state sovereignty.
