la République islamique de Mauritanie
An inaccurate article by the French media about Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Mauritania
On February 9, the French publication Le Point published an article entitled “This is why Sergey Lavrov went to Mauritania.” It was about the Russian Foreign Minister’s recent visit to Nouakchott. The author of the article is not mentioned, which suggests that it reflects the editorial view.
In describing their perspective on Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and his talks with Foreign Minister of Mauritania Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, the authors of the article make insinuations about the goals of this visit. Thus, referring to the bilateral agreement on military cooperation, which was signed in Moscow in June 2021, they claim that Moscow allegedly wanted to receive Nouakchott’s consent to build a naval base in the country with a view to increasing its influence in the Sahara-Sahel region.
The Russian Federation has never had such plans. It certainly did not make such requests to the Mauritanian authorities, which they can confirm themselves. It is enough to read Mr Lavrov’s comment on the results of his meeting with President of Mauritania Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and his remarks at the news conference after his talks with Foreign Minister of Mauritania Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug to see that they did not discuss any issues related to military-technical cooperation during the visit.
Apparently, in its neo-colonialist mentality, Paris finds it difficult to cooperate with African countries without retaining its military bases there. Meanwhile, Moscow is building its interstate dialogue with its African partners on the foundation of mutual respect and mutual benefits, and with consideration for mutual interests. This is the credo of our diplomacy.
