Press release on a sharp escalation in Sudan

An armed clash between Sudan’s armed forces and Rapid Support Forces shook Khartoum in the morning of April 15. According to the incoming information, the hostilities involving heavy weapons are taking place near the Republican Palace, army headquarters, the airport, the central market and military bases in southern Khartoum. The international airport is temporary closed, and bridges over the Nile are blocked. There are also reports of violence in Meroe, located 500 km to the north from Khartoum.

Moscow is gravely concerned about the dramatic events taking place in Sudan. We call on the parties to the conflict to show political will and restraint and take prompt measures to cease fire. We firmly believe that any disputes can be resolved through talks. 

The Russian Embassy in Khartoum continues to operate having taken all the necessary security measures. No Russian citizens have been injured in Sudan.
