Question: What can you tell us about recent reports in the foreign media regarding an alleged secret supply of Russian arms to Fiji, which has been considered part of a territorial conflict in the Asia-Pacific?

Maria Zakharova: This is another example of how conspiracy theorists missed a shot with claims of a “Russian trail” in the South Pacific. Russian small arms and ammunition have been supplied to Fiji upon an official request from this country and will be used by the Fijian armoured infantry battalion, which is part of the UN Disengagement Observer Force based in the Golan Heights.

In response to the claims about the ‘secrecy’ of the delivery, I would like to note that in late February, Fiji plans to hold an official ceremony to hand over the said supply to its armed forces. When the Fijian peacekeepers finish their training they will depart for their mission in the Middle East. Undoubtedly, Russia’s assistance to Suva will increase the efficiency of peacekeeping efforts in the Golan Heights.

We will be further expanding multidimensional cooperation, including through military supplies, with Fiji and other countries in the South Pacific. This cooperation is not intended to interfere in their domestic affairs or against third countries.
