Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s telephone conversation with German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas

On October 24, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas in a phone call initiated by the German side.

The discussion focused on the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic, in particular, following the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Sochi on October 22 and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Russia and Turkey.

The ministers reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to continue working jointly to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria and to combat international terrorism.

The parties agreed that the beginning of the Constitutional Committee’s activities under the auspices of the UN might be an important step towards settling the crisis in Syria and launching the political process in the country.
