Press release on the appointment of Maria Zakharova as Director of the Information and Press Department

The Foreign Ministry has issued an order appointing Maria Zakharova as Director of the Information and Press department.

In 1998 Ms Zakharova graduated from the Foreign Ministry’s MGIMO international information department as a specialist on world affairs. She is fluent in English and Chinese and holds the diplomatic rank of minister-counselor.

 Upon graduation, she worked in the Foreign Ministry as an editor of the Diplomatichesky Vestnik monthly. She was also responsible for monitoring at the Information and Press Department. In 2005−2008 Ms Zakharova served as the head of the press service of Russia’s Permanent Mission at the United Nations in New York. In 2008−2011 she held various positions in the ministry’s central office. In 2011 she was appointed deputy director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
