Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova’s answer to a media question on the desecration of a Soviet military cemetery in the city of Poznan, Poland
Question: Can you comment on the act of vandalism committed against a Soviet military grave at a cemetery in Poznan on August 31?
Maria Zakharova: Yet another outrageous incident shows that the Polish authorities are not heeding our repeated appeals to take decisive action against the increasingly common desecration of the graves of Soviet soldiers who died while liberating Poland from the Nazi invaders.
As we have repeatedly stressed, the regular acts of vandalism against Soviet memorials in Poland are the direct consequence of Warsaw-fomented Russia hate propaganda and historical revanchism aimed at revising the results of World War II and belittling the Red Army’s decisive role in defeating Hitler’s Nazism.
We demand that the results of this disrespectful attack be mitigated and the perpetrators be found and brought to account. We insist on Poland’s unconditional compliance with the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Poland on Burials and Memorials of Wars and Repressions of February 22, 1994, and the Treaty between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Poland on Friendly and Good-Neighbourly Cooperation of May 22, 1992, where it concerns the protection of memorials.
