Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s participation in an International Syria Support Group ministerial meeting
On September 20, Sergey Lavrov attended a ministerial meeting of the International Syria Support Group in New York. The ministers discussed the current situation in Syria and around it in light of the Russian-US agreements reached in Geneva on September 9. The ministers agreed on the need for all sides to observe the ceasefire, which would reduce violence, secure humanitarian aid access to the affected civilians, in particular in Aleppo, and encourage progress towards a broad intra-Syrian political dialogue.
Mr Lavrov assigned priority to the United States’ meeting its commitment to separate moderate opposition groups from terrorists and to more resolute pressure on radical groups from influential regional parties.
Before the session, Mr Lavrov met with US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Contacts between the International Syria Support Group will continue on the sidelines of the ministerial week of the UN General Assembly’s 71st session.
