Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Ahmad Jarba, leader of Syria’s Tomorrow opposition movement

2523-27-12-2017

On December 27, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Ahmad Jarba, leader of the Syria’s Tomorrow opposition movement, in Moscow.

The officials noted that the destruction of ISIS, with the decisive assistance of Russian Aerospace Forces, had created favourable conditions for launching a comprehensive Syrian political settlement process, in keeping with the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2254. They noted the valuable role played by the Astana Process and the decisions and documents adopted at the 8th International Meeting on Syria in Astana on December 21−22 this year.

In this context, they discussed preparations for the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, due to be held on January 29−30, 2018, with the widest possible representation of Syria’s political associations, ethnic and religious groups, tribes, and civil society. The officials also emphasised the need to ensure that the forum in Sochi promoted the UN-sponsored intra-Syrian talks in Geneva.

On the same day, Mr Jarba held detailed consultations with Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
