Press release on the Friends of the CTBT meeting
The Eighth Ministerial Meeting of the Friends of the CTBT was held on the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly session in New York on September 21.
The participants in the event marking the 20th anniversary of the CTBT’s opening for signature reaffirmed the importance of this international legal instrument for the global system of international security and the priority of its immediate entry into force. Most delegations condemned the DPRK’s fifth nuclear test that undermined the international community’s efforts to launch the CTBT.
The meeting approved a joint statement drafted with Russia’s participation, which called on eight states (the USA, China, India, Pakistan, Israel, Egypt, Iran, and the DPRK), whose ratification is essential for the CTBT to enter into force, to do their best to join the Treaty as soon as possible.
