Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov’s consultations with Director-General for Political Affairs of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs Anna-Karin Enestrom

On September 20, Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov held consultations with Director-General for Political Affairs of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs Anna-Karin Enestrom on the sidelines of the ministerial week of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.

The diplomats exchanged opinions on a wide range of topical issues on the UN Security Council agenda.

The subjects that were discussed included the situation on the Korean Peninsula. The parties expressed their common opinion that it is necessary for the UNSC members to work together so as to be able to achieve progress towards a political and diplomatic settlement, which is particularly relevant when the pressure from sanctions is no longer effective.

The deputy minister and director-general also touched upon the Syrian crisis. The Russian representative stressed the importance of giving a new impetus to the political settlement process and intensifying coordinated work of the international community in providing assistance to the Syrian people by improving the humanitarian situation as well as the country’s post-war recovery.

Opinions were exchanged regarding the parameters of the UN’s support of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine.
