Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Vice President of South Sudan Hussein Abdelbagi

On September 22, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan Hussein Abdelbagi Akol Agany on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The parties exchanged views on a number of current issues on the bilateral agenda, and the main areas for the further development of the Russian-South Sudanese partnership in various fields, including deepening political dialogue, strengthening cooperation in the UN and other multilateral platforms.

Sergey Lavrov and Hussein Abdelbagi also considered the current situation in South Sudan, and the prospects for a final settlement of the internal conflict in the light of the parties’ recent decision to extend the transition period in the republic until July 2025. The Russian side reaffirmed its support for the efforts of the South Sudanese government and the African community represented by the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) to restore peace, ensure stability and security in South Sudan.
