Press release on Russia-EU talks on countering terrorism

On February 8, Moscow hosted talks on international cooperation in countering terrorism between the Russian interagency delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov, and the EU delegation, led by Deputy Secretary General for CSDP (Common Security and Defence Policy) and Crisis Response at the European External Action Service (EEAS) Pedro Serrano.

The sides exchanged assessments of global and regional terrorist threats and counter-terrorism experience in Russia and the EU. The focus was on  preventing the activity of “foreign terrorists,” combating the diffusion of terrorist and extremist ideology, fighting radicalisation, including on the internet, countering the financing of terrorism and ensuring the antiterrorist security of civil aviation.

The sides discussed possibilities to expand anti-terrorism cooperation in multilateral formats, primarily at the UN.

The Russian side confirmed the need to pool the efforts of the entire international community in the fight against the global threat of terrorism based on international law, the UN Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

An agreement was reached to hold the next round of talks in Brussels.
